Key Stage 4 – Core PE At KS4 students are taught 2 hours of Physical Education a fortnight, building on the knowledge, understanding and skills established in Key Stage 3 Physical Education. As well as focusing on enjoyment and improving fitness, we hope to encourage continued participation after leaving school. KS4 students are given ‘options’ to choose from, giving the students independence for their own learning. We like the students to have as much of an input as possible with structuring their own curriculum, by giving the students options to choose from, with the view to keeping the students focused and interested. We have great facilities at Fernhill, a large Sports Hall, Gymnasium, Tennis / Netball Courts, large playing fields and a Fitness Room. GCSE PE For those wishing to opt for a qualification in PE, we offer GCSE PE (AQA). Students receive 6 lessons a fortnight for this course (in addition to core PE). These are split into theory and practical lessons, usually with 4 lessons taught in a classroom and 2 practical lessons, due to the weighting of practical and theory marks awarded within the course. Theory (60%) Theory topic areas: Anatomy and Physiology, Movement Analysis, Physical Training, Sports Psychology, Socio-cultural Influences, Health Fitness and Well-being and the use of data. Within the lessons, the students will be taught the specific course content across the 6 units. But more importantly, how to apply that knowledge to sporting examples and real life situation. This is the most vital part of the course, as this is how the students will pick up the higher marks in the exams. Practical (30%)
Coursework (10%) Demonstrating their ability to analyse their own performance as well as being able to draw on some of the subject knowledge they have been taught, to apply that to a real life situation of trying to improve their own performance. |
We hope that all students leave school with an interest in some form of physical activity.
For those that have a real keen interest and would like to further their education in sport and exercise, there many different courses offered by our local and neighbouring colleges ranging from Sports Science, Coaching and Sports Development.
