Click button above for curriculum maps At Fernhill we aim to inspire children to develop artistically, surrounding them in a creative programme that utilises core visual skills, hoping to encourage creative minds that will shape the future. Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. We aim to offer a high-quality art and design education to engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. It helps students to think creatively and critically, teaches them to evaluate and refine work, while never giving up. Art and design helps to develop spatial awareness, visual perception and memory and fine motor control. The curriculum shows how art and design reflect and shaped our history, and contributes to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation. Please see the curriculum overview and maps for a more in-depth explanation for each year group.

We embolden learners to become Artists in their own right and while their learning journey is facilitated and guided within the department they are encouraged to explore starting points, current affairs, their own experiences and interests creatively to produce original and individual responses. While they master their practical skills they will form opinions and showcase their work in an articulate and considered manner. The courses are supported by field trips to see current exhibitions and areas of interest that aid idea development while widening their cultural experience. One of the most popular trips has been the ‘London Walking Tour’ where students have seen important historical and cultural sites set against modern architectural developments. |
